Study Abroad Programs

The Canadian Summer School in Germany (CSSG)
The Canadian Summer School in Germany (CSSG) offers university-level language and culture studies in Kassel, in a unique and intensive immersion program. The CSSG is organized under the auspices of the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German (CAUTG) and offers courses at the intermediate and advanced level. For a period of approximately 6 1/2 weeks, from early May to mid-June, students participate in a full course (approximately 85 hours of classroom instruction) and in numerous additional activities: lectures at various museums, visits to theatres and operas, excursions to cities with cultural and historical significance, and a three or four day trip to Berlin. The main feature of the program, though, is the students’ rapid progress in linguistic skills enhanced mainly by the fact that they are immersed in German life, culture and civilization. German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Summer and Full-Year Programs
The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) offers several scholarships for summer language study at a German university, as well as full-year scholarships for students who will have completed their bachelor’s degree. Detailed information and application forms are available online at http://www.daad.org .

  • edu.de Scholarships for study abroad, university language courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany, either as part of an organized study abroad program, or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year (between four and ten months). Open to students with at least second-year standing at time of application and at least third-year standing by the beginning of the scholarship period. Deadline: mid-February.
  • Deutschlandjahr scholarship for graduating seniors
  • Hochschulsommerkurse at German universities
  • German Studies Research Grant
  • Berlin – European Metropolis of the Third Millennium. This new program for students proficient in German offers four weeks of intensive language study at the Humboldt University, Berlin, as well as numerous cultural activities. Applicants must have completed four semesters of university-level German at time of application. Scholarship covers fees, some excursions, room and partial board. Application deadline: January 31.
  • German for Engineering Students. A four-week program with a language component, lectures on entrepreneurial culture and management from a German practitioner’s perspective, cultural activities and excursions. Open to third- and fourth-year engineering students with at least one semester of university-level German or equivalent at time of application. Scholarship covers fees, excursions, room and partial board. Application deadline: March 15.
  • Summer Language Courses at Goethe-Institutes. Intensive eight-week language courses at Goethe-Institutes in Germany for full-time graduate students. Students in the fields of English, German or any other modern languages or literatures are not eligible. Applicants must have completed three semesters of university-level German or equivalent at time of application and be under 33 years of age. Scholarship covers fees, room and partial board. Application deadline: January 31.
  • DAAD Grants for Canadians. This scholarship provides funds for study and/or research in Germany for an academic year (October 1 to July 31). Open to undergraduate students in their final year for study following their bachelor’s degree, and to graduate students pursuing their master’s or doctorate for study and/or research prior to completion of their degree.Open to all disciplines except medicine. In general, applicants must be Canadian citizens enrolled full time in a North American university degree program. Preference will be given to students under 33 years of age. Students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have a good command of German. Students at DAAD Partner Institutions must obtain detailed information and application forms from their campus DAAD contact person. Memorial University Summer Field School
Memorial University offers three intermediate German courses by Web during mid-May through July, culminating in four weeks of intensive language practice during August in Heidelberg, Germany. All Canadian students are eligible and may participate in the Web-based portion from anywhere in Canada, but must be available to travel to Germany on August 1. Total cost, including tuition for three courses, airfare from Toronto, lodging, food and incidentals in Heidelberg, is approximately $3200. The Ontario-Baden Württemberg Exchange
Ontario undergraduate and graduate students may participate in this educational exchange program between the province of Ontario and the German Land of Baden-Württemberg. Undergraduates spend September to July at one of 9 German universities for credit at their home university. Appplicants should normally have completed at least one year of German, but the year abroad begins with a free four-week intensive language course at the host university. Some financial aid is available. Application deadline: early January. The University of Mannheim Study Year
Organized through the University of Waterloo, the program offers Canadian students the opportunity to study October to July at the Universität Mannheim in Germany. Course selection is wide and includes one course given by a resident University of Waterloo instructor. Applicants should have completed at least 3 semesters of German. Accommodation is in university residences. Cost is estimated at about 15-20% more than at a Canadian university. Ontario residents can participate simultaneously in this program and the Ontario-Baden-Württemberg Exchange Program . Application deadline January 15.

The Canadian Year in Freiburg
Organized by the German departments of Acadia University, Brock University, Trent University and the University of British Columbia, the program offers students the opportunity to study September to July, for Canadian university credit, at the Universität Freiburg. A resident Canadian professor teaches a four-week immersion course and two other courses in language, literature and culture, and helps students integrate into the German university environment. The program arranges a group flight plus ground transportation, accommodation in university residents and many activities. Students in all fields may apply, but they should have completed at least an intermediate-level university German course with a grade of B (75%) and have a B- average in all other courses. For full-time students only (5 full courses). Cost is estimated at about $13,100, including all fees, living expenses, and health insurance but excluding travel between Canada and Germany. Many other Canadian universities have exchange and study-abroad programs with partner universities in Germany. If you are interested in studying abroad, it is worth asking if your own university maintains such a program.

Work-Abroad Programs

The Work-Student Program (Werkstudentenprogramm)
Sponsored by the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German (CAUTG), this program gives Canadian students the opportunity to work at summer jobs in Germany, usually in the tourist industry, for an eight-week period, after which they have one month free to travel. Students travel on a subsidized charter flight made possible by annual support from the DAAD. Applicants should be in Intermediate German or higher. Applications must go through your department advisor. Deadline: November 15.

The Foreign Language Assistant Program (PAD Fremdsprachenassistentenprogramm)
The Canadian Association of University Teachers of German (CAUTG), in cooperation with the German Pedagogical Exchange Office or Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD), coordinates this exchange program which annually places approximately 30 Canadians in positions as English-language assistants at secondary schools in the Federal Republic of Germany. They receive a stipend of DM 1370 DM per month (as of 2001). Applicants must be in the final year of their B.A. degree, which they will have completed upon assuming the position, and have a very good command of German. Applications must go through your department advisor. January 31 (ealier departmental deadlines might apply).

The IAESTE Program
IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) is a non-governmental enterprise offering overseas job experience and training to students in engineering, the sciences, and technical fields such as as architecture, forestry and agriculture. Placements may be arranged in any of 70 member countries. Early in February a list of available positions is circulated to applicants for consideration. Candidates return an application up-date ranking those places of interest for which they meet all requirements. The best-qualified candidate will then be selected for each position. Jobs are usually for 8-12 weeks in the summer and typically pay about $250/week. The receiving countries arrange for any necessary permits, lodging, etc.; students are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs. Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in a program at a Canadian university or college leading to a degree or diploma in any of the fields covered and who are not more than 30 years of age.
