I have deeply adored Professor Hatto's translations. Read them if you haven't. Parzival is as hilarious as it is beautiful and enigmatic; and his Tristan and The Nibelungenlied are equally not to be missed. May Professor Hatto remain immortal through the continued reading of these works.

Cheers!

Canadian German studies has been in full self-destruct mode for well over one decade now, and it is as sad as it is painful to witness that it still is that way. The perception of the 'inadequate' Canadian PhD stems from a massive inferiority complex that seems to have infected faculty members everywhere and, worse, graduate students and recent PhDs. Few have the courage to admit it though most show the scars of this psychological illness. This, in turn, has led people to believe that they cannot possibly deliver what they would like to deliver and what they advertise in their expensive glossy, environmentally most unfriendly brochures. If American universities are less likely to accept Canadian PhDs [I'm not sure that this is true], they are blind, for Canadian PhDs outshine their competitors south of the border often by far. What is unethical, unfair, and indeed destructive, is that some PhD-[in German Studies]-granting institutions keep filling their junior, tenure-stream faculty positions from abroad. Why they keep doing this and how they keep getting away with it is beyond me. (Smaller institutions - with smaller German/German Studies programs - have not done this to my knowledge; they have, more often than not, not only kick-started splendid academic careers of Canadian PhDs, but thereby also lent strong evidence to the fact that Canadian PhDs are NOT in the very least inferior to those south of the border or elsewhere, except maybe for their display in arrogance).
Can this idiotic hiring tradition at UBC, UofT, McGill and . . . be rectified? Is it even possible to end on a positive note here? Would I, a tenured full professor [on LTD and slow decay], advise anyone to pursue an academic career in German Studies at all? 10 years ago my answer to either one of these questions would have been 'absolutely'. Today, to be honest, I'm not sure anymore. Times [maybe I should say markets] have changed, and the outlook is not good in more ways than one. But markets go up and down very quickly and what's cheap today is expensive tomorrow. My advice to anyone out there looking for a job: hang on to your stocks for a little while, keep an eye on foreign markets across the ocean, and do not under any circumstances dismiss private-sector career opportunities as they arise.

Predictably this job has gone to another non-Canadian, as have eight of the last ten tenure track jobs advertised in Canada. It's time we asked ourselves why we continue to offer German PhD programs in Canada. Why are Canadian PhDs regarded as inferior in this country? And if they are inadequate, why are steps not being taken to rectify the problem? In my experience, American universities are even less likely to accept Canadian PhDs, and given their unfamiliarity with Canadian universities, why should they? To use a hockey metaphor (this is Canada after all), it appears as though Canadians are regarded as the role players, the ones fit for short-term contracts, while international candidates consitute the elite, the ones worthy of consideration for tenure track appointments. Given the current state of affairs, isn't it unethical to continue graduating Canadians? I would advise anyone interested in a career in Germanistic to pursue their PhD south of the border.

Hi All,

I already introduced this new tool. The results are more than excellent, this is the perfect response to the high expectations of our dynamic students (Generation Me, Generation Net ?).
For the Oral examination, my students had the choices: traditional group presentation, to answer questions in the CAN-8 digital language lab or to make a short movie.

Most of them jumped into the adventure of movie making!
Thank you Krisztián!
It would be a great idea to link the best videos to the CAUTG-webs and to put them on youtube as well.

Have a successful end of semester

best
