The Department of German and Russian at Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning 1 July 2011, subject to budgetary approval. A completed earned doctorate (or recognized terminal qualification in the discipline) is required for the appointee to receive the rank of Assistant Professor and to be in a tenure-track position. (If a successful candidate has not completed an earned doctorate, he/she shall be appointed to a regular term, non-renewable three-year appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. If the candidate completes all the requirements for the doctorate during the first 24 months of the term appointment, he/she shall begin a tenure-track appointment following completion of the requirements of the degree). Applicants must be fluent in English and German, have a broad background in German Language, Literature, and Culture, and possess a PhD. Applications from candidates with the ability to teach in the areas of contemporary German literature and New Media will be especially welcomed. We are seeking an individual who is committed to working effectively with students. We require a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, the ability to teach courses at various levels in an undergraduate German curriculum, and a desire to contribute to the department’s growing graduate program. In addition, it would be desirable that the candidate be interested in exploring alternate means of course delivery. We are also looking for candidates who have an active research agenda with potential for peer-reviewed publications and who are willing to share in leading the Heidelberg Field School on a rotational basis.

DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGES & LITERATURES

The Department of Languages and Literatures of Acadia University (German and Spanish sections) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position (Position # 10601) at the Lecturer or Assistant Professor rank (depending on qualifications) effective July 1, 2010. This is a cross-appointment in German and Spanish.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or be about to complete a Ph. D. in a relevant area. The successful candidate will be able to teach courses in Peninsular or Latin American literature and culture and language courses at all levels in the Spanish unit. He or she must also be qualified to teach courses in German language at all levels; the ability to teach courses in German literature and culture will be considered an asset. The Department is seeking candidates who are fluent in Spanish, German and English. Candidates are asked to describe their experience with the use of digital technology to enhance language learning. They must provide evidence of a strong teaching record and a promising program of research in their area of expertise.

The Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver invites applications for a limited-term appointment at the Assistant Professor level in German Literature.  This position will be for 12 months, with the expectation of renewal for a further 12 months. The epoch of expertise is open, but preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching and interest in interdisciplinary and/or cultural studies, especially in a Central and/or Eastern European context. The appointment will begin in January 2010, and is subject to final budgetary approval.

The GERMAN-CANADIAN STUDIES RESEARCH GRANT is awarded on an annual basis for the best project proposal on any aspect in the field of German-Canadian Studies. This $2,500.00 grant is awarded by the Spletzer Family Foundation Inc. to foster general and community interest and research into the past and present experiences of German-speaking immigrants and their descendents in Canada, as well as into history and nature of relations and exchanges between Germany and Canada. The competition is open to academic researchers at the faculty or student level, private researchers, and collaborative projects, including projects at K-12 school levels. Department of Linguistics

McGill University

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Linguistics, McGill University, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, effective 1 August 2010. This is a joint appointment between Linguistics and one of the following departments: German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian Studies, or Russian and Slavic Studies. The successful candidate will be an experimentalist, specializing in the acquisition or processing of the syntax of German, Italian, Spanish or Russian. Additional assets include a demonstrable ability to teach courses on topics such as the grammatical structure of the language in question, the history of the language, dialect variation, bilingualism, etc.

General qualifications: PhD in linguistics and demonstrated excellence in research and teaching in the area(s) of specialization. Duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, graduate research guidance and administrative responsibilities. Duties will be split equally between the two departments sharing the joint appointment. Salary: McGill scale. Deadline for applications: 15 November 2009.
